Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) was established under the Jammu and Kashmir Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University Act, 1999, as an autonomous, highly technical and fully residential university. It started functioning in August 2004, inaugurated by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The university is approved by UGC under Section 2(f) and 12(B), with technical programs recognized by AICTE and architecture programs recognized by the Council of Architecture. It receives funding from the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, UGC, and the Jammu & Kashmir UT Government.
