I am Professor of Political Economy at the University of Oxford, a Fellow of New College, and Director of Oxford Elevate, Oxford's executive programme in economics for business leaders.

I am an economist and game theorist. My work asks how social institutions such as norms, culture, identity, and religion shape economic behaviour and development: why people veil, why religious groups demand sacrifice, how radicalisation spreads, why some communities resist education. Lately I have turned to the political and economic risks of AI.
