Case Study 625 Evaluating Lewatit® VP OC 1065 Performance as a Solid Sorbent for Direct Air Carbon Capture

PDF · 26 May 2026

The case study investigates the carbon‑capture potential of the amine‑functionalised polymeric resin Lewatit® VP OC 1065 for direct air capture (DAC). Using complementary high‑resolution gravimetric sorption (DVS Carbon Advanced) and packed‑bed breakthrough (BTA Frontier) techniques, the authors measured single‑component CO₂ isotherms, water sorption, and multicomponent CO₂/H₂O co‑sorption under conditions that mimic ambient air (low CO₂ ppm levels, varied relative humidity, 25 °C). Results show a steep low‑pressure CO₂ isotherm indicating strong affinity, with dry‑condition CO₂ uptake of ~4.6 wt % (breakthrough) to ~5.8 wt % (gravimetric). Introducing humidity (70 % RH) yields a pronounced synergistic effect: CO₂ capacity rises to ~7.1 wt % (breakthrough) – a ~54 % increase – while water uptake reaches ~9.9 wt %. The enhancement is attributed to both chemical mechanisms (formation of bicarbonate species) and physical swelling of the resin beads (≈4 % diameter increase at high RH). A seven‑cycle co‑sorption test (10 % CO₂ + 50 % RH) demonstrates modest capacity loss, indicating acceptable short‑term stability. The study concludes that Lewatit® VP OC 1065 is a promising DAC sorbent, though long‑term durability and oxidative degradation require further assessment.
