This 2004 empirical study (De Cremer & Alberts) tested how the opportunity to voice opinions (voice vs. no voice) affects positive affect depending on how a group leader was selected (appointed; elected—own choice; elected—not own choice) and participants' need to belong (high vs. low). In a between-subjects lab experiment with student groups (N = 90), voice increased positive affect except when the leader was elected but did not reflect the participant's choice — an effect that occurred primarily among participants high in need to belong. The paper argues leader-selection procedures shape whether procedural fairness signals (voice) convey belongingness-relevant information.
