Kenny Keller is coaching a student to her private pilot helicopter rating in just over 20 flight hours, using a notebook, videos, and textbooks to front-load ground knowledge. She's ready for her oral exam two months in, proving that ratings don't need to stretch to 100-plus hours like many flight schools claim.

  1. The way it should be. I just have to tell you, I've got a young lady I've been working with getting ready for her private pilot. I haven't done an initial in a lot of years, and I complain about flight schools, instructors, and a lot of things that go on in the flight training world. And so I kind of had to put my money where my mouth is with this young lady. And I started out with her less than 2 months ago. She's getting ready for solo. As of today, she's answering oral questions at the private pilot level, getting ready to take her written very shortly. We have her day cross-country done, or cross-country dual done. We might finish her night tonight. She's just over 20 hours. And I told her, she was here with her mom today, and I said, this private thing's gonna happen sooner than you expect. I told her end of summer, and she's like, I don't, that was a couple weeks ago. And I told her today, I go, you think the end of summer's unreachable? You can be done before the end of summer. And here's the thing, why? Because we started out with her the right way, got her hogs, started watching the videos, got her all the books she needs, pointed her in the right direction, gave her the guidance, She studies hard, comes 2 days a week, and we do fly-in, but we do mainly ground. So here is proof, and I'm going to ask her how much of her story I can share and maybe do some videos with her here soon. But I'm telling you, all this stuff that we've been preaching is doable. And here's the point I want to make. I sat right here with her and went over this. I used my notebook, the same thing I use for everybody that comes here. To prep for a checkride. In the first 6 or 8 pages of my notebook, she's answering every single question. This is the notebook I use for prepping people. All these final approach courses we've done the last 3 years, 50 of them now, half the people that come here can't answer half the questions. And my biggest job is honing the ground and getting the ground where it needs to be. People, and let me tell you this, you know, these guys have had come down that had 100 hours and hadn't even soloed yet. Those instructors stealing their money, man. Flight schools that running you up to 100 hours, 120 hours, 160, and you haven't sold it or your rating ain't done, you better be looking at what's going on. There's no reason for it. These ratings don't need to drag out to 120, 150, 180 hours. It doesn't need to happen. Doesn't need to happen. This is so much fun. And like I said, we'll share more as it goes, but The girl's got just over 20 hours. We got most of her dual requirements done, answering the private pilot level, getting ready to take her written, and she hasn't even soloed yet. That's why I told her, I go, that written is going to be done shortly. We can put all that to sleep, and your solo is going to go fast. Once we start soloing, it's checkride prep, and before you know it, I'm going to be calling the examiner to take a test. And she's just like, she's just kind of looking at me with her bright eyes, and her mom was here, and her mom was pretty excited too. People, I'm telling you, study. It's about the knowledge. Everybody wants to fly the helicopter. That's the easy part. That's the fun part. The hard part's the knowledge. So if your rating's getting drug out, you need to reevaluate. What's the problem? Normally, the problem is everybody falls behind on the ground knowledge because the helicopter flying is the fun part. That's what everybody wants to do. Of course we do. We love it. It's fun. It's a blast. Flying the helicopter is great. And the flight school, guess what? When the rotors are spinning and they got you in the aircraft, they're making money. But when you got 100 hours and you ain't soloed, there's an issue. And the issue is with the flight school and the instructor most of the time. It's not usually you. So stay tuned for more, but proof it can be done, people. Proof it can be done. Peace out.
