Hallie Bulkin describes a 2-minute snack screening she uses in pediatric therapy to observe oral-motor skills without formal labeling. She frames it casually to parents, never charges extra, and provides superbills for reimbursement instead of submitting the screening results to insurance.

  1. Language feeding screener, I'll add this. If I'm doing an OT one, I'll add this as part of that. If I have concerns, I will say to the parent, hey, I've noticed some things. Is it cool if we have a snack together? Because I just want to see how they use some oral motor skills. That's literally all I will say. I don't even say like I'm doing a screening because it's a 2-minute snack as part of our regular session. And then I might come back and be like, you know, when we were having a snack, I noticed this, this, and this. I would like to evaluate this further because I think it's all interconnected to the work we're doing, and I think that we could better help them if we have some more information. I've never had a parent say, no, please don't do that. They're always like, oh yeah, totally. If you— yeah, go for it. You know, they'd ask what it costs, is there an additional fee, et cetera, et cetera. We don't take insurance in my practice, so I've never done anything to justify insurance. We do have families that submit on their own because we give them super bills, and so they might take what we give them, right, and submit it, but they're not submitting screening results. They'll only be submitting an evaluation report.
